Porn Kills Marriage?

Two economists have recently released a study that says hardcore porn sites kills marriages, an assertion that was pretty surprising to me when I first heard it. After all, I have been married for over two decades and have watched porn sites’such as Pix And Video‘just about the whole time. Hmm, I wonder if there is truth in this study.

To be fair here, this study didn’t actually state that hardcore porn, or any site in particular, destroys marriage. No, the study actually loops all kinds of pornography together into one big bucket. The reason for that is because the study assumes that most men would lie about their porn habits anyway.

Anyway, back to the study. This study can be basically boiled down to this conclusion: That the abundance of inexpensive porn not only makes young men less likely to get married, but also may cause a spike in the divorce rate. All this time, I never had any idea that watching hours of porn on Pix And Video would cause me to leave me wife. Who would’ve thought’

I spent some time going through this study and sifting through its copious amount of math, and I have come to a conclusion. This study is full of fucking shit. That’s because the authors of this study evidently don’t realize the difference between correlation and causation.

In the study, it is stated that men between the age of 18-35 are less likely to get married or stay married, if they admitted to watching online porn. Okay, it does appear that there is some correlation here. However, there is no causation.

Of course, there are a lot of reasons these guys could decide not to marry or stay married. What if they asked the guys about how much sci-fi they watch and find out there is an increase in divorce rates among science fiction lovers’ Does that mean that sci-fi actually causes the effect’ No, it doesn’t.

It’s just another study that uses a lot of assumptions’wrapped in a scientific mantle’to prove its point. The point that porn is bad. How many times have we heard that over the years’ A lot. There are studies that said that porn has caused everything from maladjusted men to the breakdown of society. And none of these studies have proved their point.

Are there guys who watch porn that have bad marriages or don’t want to ever get married’ Sure there are. Just like there are a lot of guys who listen to heavy metal music, watch the news, or have a cup of coffee in the morning. Maybe one of these things are causing the problem.

At this point, I am done with this study. I think that I am going to check out Hustler for a little while. Then when my wife returns from the grocery store we are going to go out to dinner and talk about how our marriage is inevitably doomed, and has been for almost 25 years now.
