Most of us probably know that interracial sex was illegal in the United States up until 1967 when the landmark case’Loving v. Virginia invalidated the laws making interracial marriage illegal. Since then, approval of interracial marriage has increased pretty dramatically.

For instance, in 1959’right before the case legalizing interracial marriage’only about 4 percent of people approved of it. Right after the case’in 1971’approval of whites and black marrying increased to 29 percent. Today, approval of interracial marriage stands at around 90 percent. A pretty dramatic rise, if I do say so myself.

These numbers not only reflect black on white pairings, however. They reflect all kinds of different ethnic and racial combinations. Which brings me to my next set of numbers. The percent of interracial relationships according to the race of the participants.

In the U.S., the most common racial combination is white men and Hispanic women’they make up about 36 percent of all interracial marriages. White and Asian make up the next sub-grouping, accounting for about 13.8 percent. And marriages between white and blacks is the least common’accounting for only about 8 percent of all interracial couples.

The next set of statistics are really interesting, at least to me. It is the set of numbers which tells you whether black women or black men are more likely to marry outside of the race. And according to these numbers, black men are the ones doing most of the marrying outside their race. 24 percent of black men marry women of other races, while only about 9 percent of black women do. Interesting, huh’

What does all of these statistics tell you’ Only that interracial relationships are more common and more accepted than ever before.
