Adult on Roku

Roku put out a notice on February 23rd, 2022, that it will no longer work with non-certified applications starting March 1st, 2022. This move affects all adult apps from private channel owners, from free porn sites like PornHub to giant premium Network sites like Adult Time and Naughty America that you might have already installed on your Roku device.

Apparently, Roku’s decision was triggered by its desire to align with its users’ needs in a bid to cover an even broader market. Roku is mainly used by developers to QA test their channels awaiting certification and publishers of their channel Store to limit audiences to a specific group.

Previously, Roku facilitated private channels for apps still at the development stage that were only accessed by whoever the developers were testing them on. However, more and more individuals took advantage of the private channels to bypass regular channels restrictions to transmit smut, war updates etc., to their audience.

Recently Roku has been in the spotlight for turning a blind eye to private channels that have been accused of spreading harmful and insightful information, such as the InfoWars Channel. Therefore, this decision, no matter how big of a headache it will be for Adult providers, is not in any way because they want to banish porn from the site but is rather a bid to control its global content output.

Although Roku’s announcement associates it to apps like OnlyFans that temporarily put a plug on porn recently due to anti-porn mindsets, it’s a move to introduce Beta Channels provision for every developer. These cater for a maximum of 20 test users and have a 120 days life span.

Roku shows its willingness to work with any sort of channel developers who are looking to acquire certification. For this reason, they have provided a somewhat simple procedure for non-certified channels to migrate to a public channel for which you can provide authentication protocols in the case that users need to sign in to access it.

Otherwise, adult content providers can always go for alternatives such as FireTV, Chromecast with GoogleTV, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, TiVo Stream, Xfinity Flex, onn TV, NVIDIA SHIELD TV, WeChip TV, Android TV devices, among others.
Otherwise, they can always join adult content creators like Adult Time in a bid to create a lasting solution via Roku’s Independent Developer Kit (IDK). The IDK is a provision for all hobbyists interested in creating and hosting a new app that caters to personal developers’ specific needs. Apparently, the IDK supports devices such as Roku Ultra, Roku Express 4K, Roku Express 4K+, Roku Streaming Stick 4K, Roku Streaming Stick 4K+, and Roku Ultra LT.

While Roku’s decision not to work with Uncertified apps might see the migration of many adult content providers, rumor has it that some channels, for instance, the Adult DVD Empire prefer to remain hidden on the platform. It is not illegal for a channel to stay hidden on the site; however, it further complicates the procedure to access it since you will need to know their discreet code and what channel name they are disguised as.
