OnlyFans announced their bans on sexually explicit content recently. The ban is supposed to take effect from the beginning of October 2021. It comes as a shock to many as the platform has been regarded very highly over the past years for being very supportive to virtual sex sellers.
The site became immensely popular during the pandemic period for being the number one source of NSFW content. In 2020 alone, the company is said to have handled up to $2 billion in sales and was actually projected to make double that amount in 2021 due to its raging popularity.
Apparently, it was initially designed back in 2016 in an effort to support artists globally to sell their videos, photos, and virtual interactions privileges but ended up becoming a sex paywall.
However, it should be noted that initially, OnlyFans had not restricted selling any type of content. The site has the perfect pay-per-view system, and members pay monthly subscriptions, tips, or even direct cash to access SFW and NSFW content on the site.
According to OnlyFans, official statement via Bloomberg. ‘In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of our platform and continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines.’ The site seeks to streamline its policies to be in line with those of their prominent banking partners and payout providers’.
‘We will be sharing more details in the coming days, and we will actively support and guide our creators through this change in content guidelines. We remain dedicated to our community of 130 million users and over 2 million creators that have earned over $5 billion on our platform.
‘OnlyFans remains committed to the highest levels of safety and content moderation of any social platform. All creators are verified prior to being able to upload any content to OnlyFans, and all uploaded content is checked by automated systems and human moderators.’
This move is understandable following recent child pornography accusations against websites like PornHub that facilitate the direct consumption of amateur porn content. There are really no solid measures to ensure that they do not facilitate buying and selling illegal content, which puts the entire company in danger of the same.
Although the company is yet to release its new terms of service, all the affected accounts have been notified, although there are claims that the site should have done a better job of facilitating their move. Please note that the site will continue to allow nudity that meets its guidelines.
The site is currently marketing a new OFTV app in a bid to offer their NSFW content creators a solid alternative and, in the process, also manage to separate SFW and NSFW content. Social media platforms such as Twitter are also developing ways to accommodate NSFW content creators.
While it makes sense for the company to be skeptical about facilitating direct porn sales, this move might badly affect the platform. The world continues to watch the site closely to see how it survives this critical yet painful transition.
Don’t you think that perhaps the company should have opted for digital currency transactions such as bitcoins and set up a few authentication methods to rule out illegal content instead’ Perhaps they should have. Anyway, what will be the next move for the millions of masturbators flocking this website for fap fodder’ You could check out our Adult Web Cam sites list and other sites for unique content if you are interested.
